The Milestones Project - Plaque Manufacture
We were fortunate to have contact with someone as talented as David McDougal who organised the making of the plaques.
His first task was to work out what the plaques would have looked like - he found one which suited at the surviving 8 mile point (apologies for the poor picture exhibiting a reflection):

Then he made the mould, out of timber with lead and steel letters - each individually crafted. You can see how he coped with the three variations required:
Then he went up to the Ironbridge Gorge and had the plates cast traditionally in cast iron - here's a picture of a reject one which curled slightly as it cooled:
He then painted them and fixed them to the extant and reinstated mileposts - see the relevant pages for the finished work.
